Susan M. Mather is Professor of Linguistics at Gallaudet University, Washington, D.C. where she has been teaching since 1998 in the Department of Linguistics.  She holds an M.A. degree in linguistics from Gallaudet University and a PhD in Socio-linguistics from Georgetown University.  She is a socio-linguist, interested in American Sign Language, particularly non-manual signals.  She co-authored the widely acclaimed story book, “Movers and Shakers:  Deaf People Who Changed the World”. She has also written numerous papers on intercultural communication, and classroom discourse.

Susan has two Deaf children and one Deaf granddaughter.  She currently lives near Gallaudet University.

SHORT BIOGRAPHY

I address interactional style differences of deaf students and teacher/interpreters in the area of culturally influenced learning and teaching styles, and the visually- and auditory-based approaches to learning and teaching. This area includes effective classroom storytelling and reading activities.

My current work focuses on the incorporation of American Sign Language facial morphology in storytelling traditions and typed/computer-mediated discourse.
